The two sustainable development goals that I connect with are zero hunger and quality education.
I resonate with zero hunger because of a charity I was involved with. Back in 2013, my church participated in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization that raises money to help hungry children. Each dollar raised was supposed to feed a child for a day, so $30 could feed one child for a month. After collecting donations, my church youth group tried the 30 Hour Famine. We did not eat for 30 hours so that we would gain some understanding of what it is like to actually be hungry, even just for a short while. This exercise was created so that we could better connect with the children around the world who are famished. After experiencing this, I realized how much I took for granted. Knowing how terrible I felt after 30 hours of not eating, I can't imagine how hard it is for those who suffer for days at a time.
Quality education is also extremely important to me after working with kids for two years. I find it very important for people to be educated. I worked at an enrichment center and tutored elementary school students. A lot of children are lucky to have parents that can help them with their homework, but the majority of the students I was helping had parents who did not speak English. Unfortunately, these parents were paying thousands of dollars for their kids to go to this enrichment center. Because of that, I find it very important for free, quality education to be made available. I also understand that there are many people who come to America with their families and lack an education. I think it would be important for those people to have access to a free, or cheap, education so that they can learn and be able to provide for their families.
